New Year’s Eve was just me and the dogs again. Such is life as a firefighter wife. He was on shift and the kids are older so they want to go hang with friends.
Surprisingly this is the first New Year’s Eve I can remember being ok with it. My mindset really changed in 2013 and that makes me happy to see.
I know quite a few people were uncomfortable with my choice of word for 2014. I get that. At first glance, it really seems negative. It’s an odd choice. But here it is the 2nd of January and I’m still happy with my choice. Choosing a word is personal and it won’t work if you pick a word just because it fits with others ideas.
While I’m looking ahead to goals and plans for this year, I wanted to take time to look back and note everything I did well or am proud of for 2013. It’s always good to celebrate!
Business in 2013
Combining my business and fitness sites here at Busy Momma was my best decision. While many will complain about whether this choice is good for marketing, I’m standing by it 100%. It was at the point I was going to shut down those sites and they would just go away. Moving them here saved the posts and gives you more to read.
I’ve gotten more connected with my readers, here and on Once a Week Cooking. I’m staying connected and asking what is needed.
At the end of 2012, I decided I needed to put more of my real voice into everything. I was trying to be too PC and everything was coming off as generic IMO. You’re never going to make everyone happy. So be yourself.
A huge goal for 2013 was to post every day. Not at any one site, but to all my sites combined. WOW this got me back into blogging. This challenge along with getting my voice back in my writing created an influx of traffic. Hmm, people will come back if you post more regularly and give them a reason to come back? Strange concept lol
I lost my list that had a tally from the beginning of the year so I can’t count exactly how many posts I got done this year. I’m super sad about that. However, there wasn’t a month that I was under 20 posts and I had a few months that were 35+. While I may not have hit exactly 365 posts, I was really close and so much better than any year previously. I’m keeping this as a regular challenge each month.
Personal in 2013
2013 was huge in my house.
I turned 40 and for once I made sure my birthday was all about me. Including a zombie themed party.
By far the biggest personal issue was our oldest graduating high school. We had a ton of major decisions to make and help her make. It was stressful, chaotic and emotional beyond belief.
Happy to report that after all the craziness and the last minute college changes, she started today towards her degree as a paramedic. She wants to follow in Dad’s steps and become a firefighter.
My Health in 2013
Year of total up and down with the health. Weight loss wasn’t what it should be by any means. But weight isn’t everything about health.
Last May I completed a half marathon. I won’t dissect that because I need to just be happy I did it. I will do another one this year, just waiting for the ok from the doc to start running. I was really happy and proud of myself when I got back into training. Definitely back on the list.
I embraced my food issues and started eating better. I’ve been dealing with the food issues for over 7 years now that I know of and it’s not easy. Mind change has helped a lot.
Biggest thing I did for my health was getting my hysterectomy 4 weeks ago. I’m still recouping and it will still be another few weeks before I’m closer to 100%. I am glad I finally had it done and look forward to painfree years now.
Business and Personal Nowhere Land
Then the thing I can’t fit in just one spot was starting a site for wives of firefighters. I sold my original site and within a couple of months I had to walk away from the community I’d created.
Friends missed me and I missed them. There was still a big gap in free information. I created a spot my friends and I could hang out at. I did it all backwards. I started with the private fb group, added the fanpage and then weeks later started getting a site started. I’m still not happy with the site and it drives me crazy that it was started all backwards. The site is extra right now and not the point of why it all started back up. Friends old and new from around the world are back to chatting all hours of the day and night.
There’s much to look back on and smile about 2013 and these are just the major items. With changes I made in business, physically and mentally, I’m really looking forward to the year ahead.
What are some of the things you liked best about 2013?
